With soulful vocals, dense jazz harmonies, a horn section, R&B breakdowns, and a studio band, “Save Yourself” mixes a variety of textures that allude to songwriter Gabi Rose’s musical influences.
The lyrics explain the internal conflict of taking care of yourself while trying to please others. My favorite lyric is “Maybe rejection, in time won’t be a thing that I reject, and rather be a love I can accept.” I’ve learned to pave my own path and be ready to pivot whenever necessary, stay positive, and keep pushing forward. There is a significant change in mood between the verse and chorus. The harmony switches from major to minor, which helps progress the story toward an ultimately positive outlook.
